The Viral TikTok Video Starts With An Animal Cracker Container?

If you’re a bird enthusiast like Melianna and Xander, you’ll love this DIY window bird feeder that’s been making waves on TikTok. Created by the creative Super Simple DIY Dad, this engaging project has been gaining popularity online. Check out the TikTok Teaser and see how easy it is to make this simple, affordable, and effective bird feeder.

I am uncertain when Edgar came up with this idea, as he approaches the world from an engineering perspective, while I approach it from a healthcare standpoint. This often leads to differing viewpoints between us. Given that he has been holding onto an empty animal cracker container from Costco for quite some time, and as a person whose instinct is to remove the clutter, it’s enough to drive a gal bonkers. Undeniably, our children inspire most, if not all, of his ideas. In any case, he created this DIY window bird feeder to let our kiddos watch the birds up close and personal.

What You’ll Need

  •  Cardboard or corrugated plastic to help mount the container to the window sill. (Edgar bought this from Home Depot).
  •  Animal crackers container. No need for a Costco membership!
  • Marker
  • Scissors

DIY Window Bird Feeder Process

Before You Begin

To guarantee a proper installation, if you opt for corrugated plastic instead of cardboard, you must cut the grain in the same direction that the window opens. For example, the grain should be vertical if the window opens vertically (like in the image). The same goes for horizontally opening windows.

Make the Mount

First, measure your corrugated plastic or cardboard pieces to match the measurements of your window. The pieces must overlap in the middle and be tall enough to fit the container opening. Then trace the opening of the container on the areas where the pieces will overlap. After tracing, cut out your circles with scissors. Cut inside the traced circles, as doing so will provide a tight fit around the opening.

Remove the Label(s)

Next, you will need to take off the labels from the container. You can choose to remove only the label that will be visible on top, as the bird seed will cover the bottom label. Edgar used hot water to soften the sticker and make it easier to scrape off, but I suggest a different approach.

Start by applying dry heat to melt the adhesive on the sticker. You can do this by partially filling the container with hot water and sealing the lid tightly. Once the lid is secure, tip the container over so that the hot water is directly over the label you want to remove, and let it sit for at least five minutes. Then, peel off the sticker. It should come off with minimal residue. Another option is to use a hair dryer to apply the dry heat. If this method fails (which is unlikely), you can try Edgar’s technique.

Put It All Together

After removing the label, clean the container with a streak-free cleaner. Doing this will help remove leftover crumbs, smudges, or residue for your little bird enthusiasts to enjoy watching birds. Once the container is cleaned and dried, fill it with about a cup of bird seed. Attach the mounting pieces and insert the bird feeder into the window sill. We recommend using it only while you are at home and not leaving it up overnight for safety reasons.

Final Thoughts On The DIY Window Bird Feeder

As can be seen in the video, this project was a hit with our children, who thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to observe the birds while having their snacks. This experience typically comes at a higher cost, but our kids got to enjoy it without breaking the bank. However, keeping the kiddos quiet for the duration of the show proved to be a bit of a challenge. Was it the most beautiful bird feeder we have ever seen? No, but that is not the point. It is a fun, quick, and inexpensive upcycling project the kids can enjoy, and that is priceless.

We hope you enjoyed this simple DIY window bird feeder upcycled from a Costco animal cracker container.
