What is Slime?

Did you know that slime is a non-Newtonian fluid? Basically, it doesn’t follow Newton’s law of viscosity and can change its consistency depending on how you interact with it (i.e., when you apply more or less force). Science is so fascinating, even in play!

When you stretch it, it can extend surprisingly far, forming thin, translucent strands that can bounce back to their original state. Yet, when you stop exerting force, it can relax and flow almost like a liquid, slowly reshaping itself. This blend of solid-like and liquid-like behavior contributes to its playful and unpredictable nature.

Depending on the type of slime recipe, you might even notice a slight sound as the slime shifts and moves i.e. when you push on it while it’s being compressed. My little ones found this comical since it sounded like the slime was passing gas. Oh the joys of childhood!

What You’ll Need for this Stretchy Slime Recipe

For each batch of slime, I used the following:

  • Nontoxic Glue2 Tablespoons. I used white glue. If you want to make transparent slime, then you will need clear glue.
  • Contact solution1 Teaspoon. It must contain boric acid.
  • Dish soap1 Teaspoon. I used Dawn. It is blue, so I did have to keep this in mind while I was adding my food coloring.
  • Food Coloring (optional BUT highly recommended). I always prefer gel. It’s more concentrated and less likely to alter any recipe ratios.

How to Make It

Combine all the ingredients in a bowl. Now is also the time to add food coloring if you are using it. Stir the mixture until it stops sticking to the bowl’s sides. This process should take less than 30 seconds. The chemical reaction happens very quickly. Voilà! Your stretchy slime is ready for play!

How Can You Play With It?

Playing with stretchy slime provides a variety of fun experiences. For starters, you can add food coloring to make it visually appealing and add an extra dose of excitement to the playtime. Make it multi-color themed for the ultimate messy, vibrant Instagram moment.

Melianna was thrilled about the rainbow theme. She could hardly contain herself while I worked on it. Typically, I encourage her to lead the recipes; however, since she requested a rainbow, she would not have made it past the first color.

Apart from its color, this slime offers endless play possibilities. For example, it can serve as the centerpiece of a pretend cooking session. Of course, our personal favorite (always) is using all the Play-Doh toys and experimenting with various tools like scissors, knives, playdoh pizza cutter, rolling pin, and more. Melianna very much enjoyed just stretching it as far as she could since this was a fairly new experience for her. With all of the stretching and manipulation, it’s not surprising the rainbow theme didn’t last too long!

Another idea includes a stretchy slime challenge game in which players see who can stretch their slime the longest without breaking it. Or, take it up a notch by using the slime to form letters and numbers, making it a fun and interactive way to practice spelling and counting. And don’t forget about the tactile benefits of playing with slime – pressing fingers or objects into the gooey substance on a flat surface can lead to some intriguing impressions and patterns.

Different Ratios = Different Experiences

We made a similar slime to this recipe that was also rainbow-themed (Melianna’s choice, of course). It was MUCH stickier but yielded a wonderful sensory play experience. Through her experience with the slime, she gained a valuable lesson about the significance of friction when washing her hands. This was an excellent opportunity to connect the slime with hand germs, even though they may not always be visible to the naked eye. A Few Important Notes About This Slime Recipe

This stretchy slime recipe is NOT safe to eat. Please keep this in mind when playing with this slime with your little one. After your kiddo is done playing, ensure they wash their hands thoroughly. Melianna is mature enough to understand this concept; however, Xander STILL puts his hands in his mouth without thinking about it. Nevertheless, we still stick to taste-safe sensory activities for Xander. Need a taste-safe option? Check out our fiber slime and oobleck posts.

Another important point is to avoid discarding it into your sink because it could cause a blockage. The best course of action is to save it in a sealed container OR pitch it in the trash when finished.
