Are you searching for a fun paper craft the entire family can enjoy? You’ve come to the right place! Meli and Xander have given the stamp of approval for our newest paper car template. Making paper toys is an excellent way to spend quality time together and encourage your little one’s imagination.
This unique Honda Pilot paper car is perfect for displaying, playing, birthday party decor, and party favors. Not to mention, since it’s hollow, you can even use it as a cute little snack cup!
Edgar and I will guide you through the step-by-step process of making a Honda Pilot paper car with your kiddo. We will cover everything from the materials you need to the folding and gluing process. Let’s dive in!
What You’ll Need
- Honda pilot paper car template (from Edgar’s Etsy store)
- 8.5 x 11 plain printer paper OR card stock paper for a more durable paper car template. Edgar used gloss photo paper, which gave the final product a beautiful finish
- scissors or Xacto knife
- glue stick
How to Use the Paper Car Template
First: Cut
To get started, you first need to select the template you want to use. Edgar offers a collection of 20 pre-made paper car (or Honda Pilot) templates on Etsy. You can choose from a wide range of designs in his listing. However, if you have a specific design in mind, you can send him a message on Etsy with your requests, and he’ll be happy to create a customized template for you.
Once you have selected a template, print it on 8.5 x 11 plain, cardstock, or gloss photo paper. Please note the paper size is essential because the dimensions of the template are specific to it.
After printing the template, use a X-acto knife or small scissors to cut it out carefully. An X-acto knife or small scissors for this specific project is recommended, as the template has narrow and precise areas requiring accuracy. However, if regular scissors are all you have, you can still use them to cut out the template.
Second: Fold
Start the 3D transformation process by folding the paper car template in the first four key areas, as shown. Ensure that you fold into the white part. I will also show two additional templates (one as a diagram and another with green lines and circles specifying the folding and gluing locations).
Next, bend where the hood and windshield meet, and ensure that you fold into the design side this time. Then, fold where the hood and grill meet in the opposite direction.
Next, find the tabs that are attached to the front wheels. Bend these tabs on both sides, folding into the white side as depicted. Then, locate the two tabs on each side of the grill and fold them into the white side. Finally, find the two tabs on each side of the hood and fold them in the same direction.
Third: Glue and Connect
Now, it’s time to glue everything together. Apply the glue stick to the tabs on both sides of the hood, then attach them to the inside of both Pilot sides.
Next, apply the adhesive to the tabs in front of the wheels and the smaller tabs on each side of the grill. Ensure that you apply it to the colored side of the design. Then, gently fold each end of the grill over the tabs in front of the wheels while tucking the smaller tabs underneath the hood. Use your fingers to apply pressure inside the paper car template to ensure a secure connection.
To continue, put adhesive on the back of the design. This time, take the glue stick and rub it onto the white side of the paper car template on both sides of the tailgate. After that, connect both sides to the rest of the template. The back should be slightly rounded, similar to a Pilot.
Voilà! You have finished making the Pilot paper car template. Your child can start playing with it now, or you can wait a little while for the glue to dry and set. However, if your child assisted you in assembling the car, they may be too excited to wait. Xander proudly made one with Edgar and couldn’t wait to show it to me.
